Timothy Scrantom began his career in the international tax departments of major law firms in the U.S. and the U.K. and has been an Adjunct Professor of International Tax for over a decade. Our knowledge of international tax allows us to understand the fundamental architecture of transnational business migration structures and strategies. Our work in this area frequently involves multiple foreign legal systems, tax principles, and sometimes arcane regulatory regimes. It also has led to various engagements in criminal tax investigations.
Our experience includes:
- Acting as special counsel to the CEO of a NYSE-listed public company in a criminal tax investigation concerning a series of offshore annuity structures.
- Acting as special international tax counsel with respect to defective international investment structures created by other tax and legal advisors.
- Advising accountants and lawyers in connection with numerous tax audits of offshore structures and transactions.
- Acting as special counsel to a firm of accountants in a wide-ranging criminal tax investigation in the U.K. involving U.S.-U.K. dual nationals.
- Acting as specialist tax advisors in numerous U.S.-U.K. cross-border estate and business migration projects.
- Providing tax and structuring advice to offshore hedge fund managers in Switzerland, Japan, the U.S., the U.K. and Ireland.
Our associated lawyers have experience with virtually every form of international financial transaction. In the area of international investments, we routinely help other lawyers navigate the unique international aspects of such transactions, advising on special tax laws, fiscal opportunities and reporting regimes. For example, in the course of these unique experiences we have:
- Designed and helped establish foreign trade zones in the U.S. for a German luxury automobile manufacturer, a U.S. automobile manufacturer and a Japanese recreational vehicle manufacturer.
- Designed U.S. operating structures, and handled international law and tax matters for over 75 foreign businesses investing into the U.S. from countries as diverse as Indonesia and Russia.
- Provided international tax and financial advice to businesses investing in over 40 countries around the world, ranging from Mongolia to Brunei to Tunisia.
- Acted as international intellectual property advisers to multinational brands in the sports apparel, satellite technology, pharmaceutical, music and automobile industries.
- Represented a U.S. publicly-traded company in an airport construction project in Mongolia financed by the Asian Development Bank.
- Structured a marketing joint venture between a "smart-card" manufacturer and the largest Canadian retail store chain.
- Established a manufacturing operation in India for a multinational computer equipment manufacturer.
